How can I market my holiday let to families?

In 2018, more than half of Britons decided on a staycation for their summer holiday. Whether this was to save money or just to enjoy the gorgeous weather we had last year, who knows! But with 57% of holiday makers staying at home, it would be a shame to miss out on this opportunity!

Last year’s top staycation locations were:

1.    Cornwall
2.    Devon
3.    Bournemouth
4.    London
5.    Cotswolds
6.    Lake District
7.    Scottish Highlands
8.    North Wales
9.    Bath
10.    Edinburgh

With last year’s holiday trend set firmly in the UK, it’s likely this year will be no different. So, if you have a holiday let, now may be the time to start making some changes to attract families looking to stay in the UK this year.

How can I attract families?

To show families your property is the perfect place for them, you really need to market directly to them. Your website should include photos of children enjoying your property and using your equipment to really give an impression of both the place and facilities offered.

When describing your property, it’s sensible to use key phrases to describe it such as ‘family-friendly’ and ‘children welcome’. This will encourage people to click through to your website when browsing online.

It’s also worth listing everything you offer in the property, especially if you provide additional extras just for the children. The more detail you provide, the better the chances of them being drawn in when they’re searching!

If you have a blog on your website, create content that attracts the right type of traveller. Sections such as ‘Top 5 places for families to visit near….’ or ‘Family friendly restaurants to try near…’ are some examples of family friendly content that parents would love to see.

What can I include for families?

A selection of family friendly games can be a real winner for people looking for the perfect child friendly properties. Crayons, colouring books and board games are a great, low cost extra, that families will really appreciate. If your property has a garden, why not provide some garden games too?

Similarly, if your property is by the beach, include some buckets and spades, chairs and a cool box to help your guests really enjoy the seaside.

People have now come to expect WIFI wherever they go, so try to ensure you have fast and free WIFI for your guests. A decent TV with a selection of family friendly DVDs will also go down a treat!

When travelling with children, the thought of having to pack up and lug around half your house can be a real nightmare. Where possible, include all the things that will make a parent’s life easier. This can include; highchairs, cots, beds guards, black out blinds and stairgates. Include these things within the cost of the booking to really give your guests value for money. If you know your property has steep stairs, or windows without child locks make the changes to create a safe environment before your guests arrive by fitting the stair gates and window locks.

Other extras you could include:

  • Non-slip bath mats
  • Children’s cutlery, plates bowls and plastic cups
  • Plug covers
  • Potty
  • Fire guards
  • Garden games, swings or sandpit

Finally, don’t forget to include leaflets, pamphlets and information about family friendly events and places to visit nearby.

It goes without saying that if the children are happy, then the parents will be happy. When these two coincide, positive reviews, return visitors and increased occupancy soon follow!
